On Wednesday, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepped out at a Commonwealth reception and were met with sunny London skies. As a soon-to-be member of the royal family, Meghan’s attendance was rather unprecedented. Both Meghan and Prince Harry were at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Center to meet with delegates and encourage the theme of ‘Powering Our Common Future.’
The bride-to-be opted for ivory and pinstripes–she wore a $1995 Altuzarra Audrey button-detailed ottoman pinstripe midi dress. The light striped spring-friendly style was a definite contrast to her future sister-in-law’s wardrobe of monochromatic pieces and Queen-approved bright colors. Kate Middleton’s royal appearance ensemble typically entails jewel colored dress coats and jackets with an occasional floral pattern worn on a designer gown or sophisticated sheath dress.
Meghan is unabashedly unafraid of ruffling fashion feathers and is continuing to put her own style stamp on the monarchy. The light linen-like dress was indeed a sharp departure from the traditional royal wardrobe of structured blazers, court shoes and stockings. The dress felt very vacation–and had a ‘resort wear’ undertone that was wholly unexpected; many royal watchers had anticipated the former Suits star would wear black slacks and a black turtleneck or modest long sleeved sweater.
The striped style and overall look was perfectly befitting Meghan’s penchant for the pattern and her love of trench vests, slit dresses and menswear jackets. The dress would could also work for less formal occasions like a casual cocktail hour or a summer garden party if paired with sandals or espadrilles and a lightweight cardigan.

Meghan’s ensemble also included $475 Tamara Mellon Paramour double-strap Mary Jane heels as well as a $700 Marguerite blazer from Australian brand Camilla and Marc. And she shun the traditional royal clutch in favor of a thick striped crossbody bag from another Australian brand, Oroton. The outfit was an international high-end mix of Canadian, French, Australian and British brands. Many of Meghan’s sartorial style picks reflect the event at hand and Meghan showed sartorial support for the Commonwealth.
Meghan also elected to wear a blazer nestled atop her bare shoulders–this is a repeat in her fashion rolodex as she has practiced the look before like when she watched the Invictus games in a burgundy leather jacket and the time she was a spectator and cheered on Prince Harry playing polo. She has also been seen in a variety of blazers and pointy heels via her Instagram profile.
Many were torn about Meghan’s look but the future duchess is all about sticking to a style that matches her uptown girl-on-the-go aesthetic. For Meghan, its all about wearing classic, chic and versatile pieces that are breezy enough to make an entrance and demure enough to leave them wanting more.
