Besides her glamorous gowns, the Princess of Wales is best known for her chic coat collection. From wool wrap ‘commuter’ coats perfect for traveling by train or helicopter to royal engagements to thick tweed toppers and tawny trenches, the mom of three has a large selection of outerwear ready for royal duty.
The princess keeps growing her stockpile of cozy camel, rich brown and dark burgundy coats in order to be prepared for the changing seasons and the arrival of autumn.
Here are 10 of Kate Middleton’s Favorite Fall Coats:
Eschewing buttons in favor of a relaxed tie fastening, this wool topper has been a favorite of the princess in recent years — making two appearances in 2022 and once in February 2023. Crafted in wool, the Long Run coat is made with structured shoulders, patch pockets, notched lapels and a tonal tie belt.
2. Hobbs Celeste Coat in Chestnut Brown
A seasonal coffee colored coat, Kate brought ‘latte dressing’ to the masses when she first stepped out in this topper in February 2012 (pictured). The deep chestnut wool coat features a studded belt at the waist and cuffs; the jacket has been a favorite of the royal for fall engagements and holiday functions. The princess has modified the double crepe coat over the years to attune to her engagements as well as the weather. Kate has worn the coat — with a bright red scarf and faux fur stole for church and in February 2023 altered the coat to have a longer length. She has even swapped out the studded wrist and waist belts for buckled leather.
A handcrafted coat in a check wool print, this midi coat from Spanish brand Massimo Dutti made its first and only appearance on official royal duty in 2020. Kate donned the printed coat with a straight lapel collar, button fastening and two front patch pockets to visit the University of Derby in October 2022. She later paired the check coat with a chunky gray sweater, pair of jeans and Blundstone boots for a day off royal duty — the princess was spotted shopping at Peter Jones department store in February 2022.
A long tailored maxi coat — Kate’s wool and cashmere blended topper has a slim fit, peak lapels, double-breasted button fastening and two flap pockets. Worn by the princess on five occasions, this fall-friendly coat pairs perfectly with suede footwear including tall brown and black boots, saddle colored block heels and pointed ash brown pumps.
5. Roksanda Denton Wool Blend Coat
A funnel multi-colored coat was Princess Kate’s pick for Sunday services at St. Mary’s church in January 2020. The fuzzy wool coat is a mix of deep blue, burgundy and light orange hues. Lined in silk, the moody graphic coat pairs perfectly with navy and espresso accessories. Kate accented her chic coat with a blue fedora wool hat with a pheasant feather and chocolate colored Stuart Weitzman knee-high ‘Zipkin’ boots.
6. Turpin Tweed Moloh Coat
Worn for Christmas Day in 2014 and again for church services in January 2018, this heavy tweed topper works for fall and seasonal celebrations. Rendered in “autumnal browns” this ankle skimming coat has brass button epaulettes and a stand up collar.
7. Independent Dressmaker
Having many of the features as the Reiss ‘Emilie’ coat (right), Kate’s mulberry colored topper was initially identified as being from the British fashion chain. Later, the palace confirmed the coat was constructed by the private royal dressmaker. The high neck funnel coat in a fall festive aubergine shade was the perfect style to pair with a red chiffon Whistles ‘Sophie Rae’ dress for a visit to Newcastle in 2012.
8. Hobbs Lori Coat
The princess wore this belted cashmere coat in olive for a fall visit to Colham Manor Children’s Centre. The longline coat was charming, chic and cozy for the early November outing in 2022. Kate paired the wool-cashmere wrap coat with a budget friendly Mango sweater dress.
9. Erdem Check Coat
Wearing this multi-colored blue coat with flecks of pink and white from the London-based luxury design house in October 2016, Kate was style goals in the sharp and sophisticated check jacket from Erdem’s Resort 2016 collection. Defined by a fitted bodice, inset waistband, concealed placket with snap closures, lightly padded shoulders and two flap pockets, the elegant design was described as “distinctly British with a wintery feel.”
Worn in December 2022 in Boston, Kate was stunning in a rich brown maxi coat by the famed British design house Alexander McQueen. Crafted from a wool blend, the tailored coat has a double-breasted silhouette with sharp, sculptural shoulders and a soft brushed brown finish.
