Kate Middleton had a Cinderella dress moment at a State Dinner at Buckingham Palace. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended a state banquet to welcome King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands on Tuesday. The icy blue mermaid Alexander McQueen dress wasn’t the only exciting part of the ensemble–indeed, Kate also donned the Lover’s Knot Tiara worn on many occasions previously by Princess Diana.
This isn’t the first time Kate has worn the stunning headpiece. In fact, she has dazzled in the glittery diamond and pearl encrusted tiara for other formal occasions. The tiara was a favorite of the late Princess Diana and features 19 diamond arches.
The Dutch Monarchs as well as the Queen and the Cambridges took part in the evening along with Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.
While Kate Middleton did not wear a sash, she did wear a yellow brooch featuring a portrait of the Queen. The special badge indicates that Kate has been given the Royal Family Order. Many outlets reported that this new honor was bestowed upon Kate recently but Majesty Magazine indicated that the duchess had worn the the family order at the Diplomatic Corps Reception in December. Regardless, this prestigious honor is of great significance and is bestowed upon female members of the royal family for their service. Kate’s pin is also unique as it’s made of glass not ivory–reportedly a tribute to Prince William.
Kate’s dress for the evening is a dusty blue mermaid gown paired with Queen Alexandra’s Wedding Necklace which was frequently worn by the Queen Mother.
Kate’s pale blue ruched mermaid gown was definitely a statement dress and felt very dramatic and princess-y. The taffeta gown featured a fitted bodice and had an almost silver sheen. Find Kate-inspired dresses below.
